Do I need a prescription for Physical therapy?
In the state of NJ, a prescription is not required to begin physical therapy, for up to 30 days, before having to refer to an appropriate healthcare provider. Please contact our office for additional questions and further clarification.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring your physical therapy prescription (provided by your referring physician) and your payment information. If your insurance is covering the cost of physical therapy, bring your insurance card. If you are covered by Workman’s Compensation, bring your claim number and your case manager’s contact information. If you are covered by auto insurance or an attorney lien, make sure you bring this information. Please make sure you arrive at Advantage Physical Therapy at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment so that we can input your insurance and intake forms into our system. For your convenience, our Intake Forms are located under our Patient Forms and may be printed prior to your appointment.
What should I wear to physical therapy?
When attending physical therapy, it’s important to wear comfortable, flexible clothing that allows you to move freely and provides easy access to the area of your body being treated. Here are some guidelines on what to wear:
Comfortable Clothing:
- T-shirts or Tank Tops: These allow for a full range of motion in your arms and shoulders.
- Athletic Shorts or Sweatpants: Opt for bottoms that allow you to move your legs freely. If you’re having treatment on your knee or hip, shorts are ideal.
Footwear:
- Athletic Shoes: Wear supportive, non-slip sneakers that are appropriate for exercise.
Avoid:
- Jeans or Tight Clothing: These restrict movement and can be uncomfortable.
- Jewelry: It’s best to leave jewelry at home to avoid any restrictions or potential loss during your session.
How many visits will I need?
This is highly variable. You may need one visit at Advantage Physical Therapy, or you may need several months of care. It depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your impairments, your past medical history, etc. You will be re-evaluated as needed, and before you see your referring doctor. We will provide your doctor with a progress report including our recommendations.
Is physical therapy painful?
For many patients, one of the primary objectives is pain relief. This is frequently accomplished with hands-on techniques, and modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and/or heat or cold therapy. Movement often provides pain relief as well. Your physical therapist will provide you with the appropriate exercises not only for pain relief but to recover range of motion, strength, and endurance.
In some cases, physical therapy techniques may increase discomfort. For example, recovering knee range of motion (after total knee replacement) or shoulder range of motion (after shoulder surgery) may be uncomfortable. It is important that you communicate the intensity, frequency, and duration of pain to your therapist. Without this information, it is difficult for the therapist to adjust your treatment plan.
Who pays for the treatment?
In most cases, your health insurance will cover your treatment. Click on Accepted Insurance under the Patient Information tab for a summary of insurance we accept. Also, make sure you talk to our receptionist so we may clarify your Insurance coverage.
How long does each visit take?
Normally, appointments are usually between 30-60 minutes. However, the first visit at Advantage Physical Therapy in Brick, New jersey requires extended time, due to the required assessment process and initial paperwork intake forms.
